The Cleveland Browns have a quarterback room that is, if nothing else, intriguing. They feature the veteran presence of Joe Flacco, a former first-round pick in Kenny Pickett who’s trying to find his footing, and two rookies in Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders.
Pickett was the Browns’ first addition of the offseason, acquired via trade with the Eagles in exchange for Dorian Thompson-Robinson and a draft pick. Cleveland then signed Flacco shortly before the draft and added two rookie quarterbacks in April.
The general belief is that the Browns will ultimately be forced to either trade or cut one of these quarterbacks. However, that’s not a foregone conclusion. Browns GM Andrew Berry was recently asked if he sees a scenario where the team keeps all four quarterbacks on the Week 1 roster.
“I do,” Berry responded.
All options appear to be on the table for a team that must improve from last season’s offensive struggles, when they averaged just 15.2 points and 322 total yards per game. Cleveland’s offense was historically ineffective, and quarterback play was the primary reason. While the offensive line and running game also regressed, the inconsistency at the most important position in football held the team back.
With Deshaun Watson expected to spend a significant portion — if not all — of the season on injured reserve, keeping four quarterbacks to start the season might be a smart move. While the Browns may not carry all four for the entire year, cutting any of them would mean risking losing a quarterback with no guarantee they’d clear waivers and reach the practice squad.
Currently, Pickett is dealing with a hamstring injury, which has opened up additional reps for Flacco, Gabriel, and Sanders as they compete for the starting job. Time will tell how much Pickett’s injury impacts the depth chart, but don’t be surprised if the Browns carry four quarterbacks into their Week 1 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.
