The Cleveland Browns ended their season in Week 18 with a loss to the Baltimore Ravens and their season ended with a record of 3-14.
On Monday, Andrew Berry met with the media following the regular season and revealed quite a bombshell about quarterback Deshaun Watson.
Watson has been recovering from surgery on his Achilles injury and it is now known that Cleveland’s quarterback has suffered a setback with the recovery there.
"We did learn that he did have a setback in his Achilles recovery,” Berry stated. “We don't have all the details, yet. It is new information."
Berry did say that the setback would impact his return to the field, so this very much puts his availability in doubt for the 2025 season. No matter when Watson returns, he can’t be handed the job back due to his availability and performance with the Browns through three seasons.
The trade with the Houston Texans for Watson has gone down as the worst trade in NFL history. There is no reason to sugarcoat it anymore.
“To date the trade hasn't gone as we anticipated. A big part has been the start-stop availability. We've never been afraid to take big swings,” Berry explained. “There's no such thing as a riskless transaction. We will be positioned moving forward to really pivot.”
The Browns have options and will have to make changes to the quarterback room going forward. Cleveland holds the No. 2 pick in the upcoming NFL draft and could find their quarterback of the future there. The Browns very well could bring in a veteran quarterback to compete for the job.
"I wouldn't say that it has a significant impact,” Berry said of the setback with Watson. “That room will look different next year."
It is too early to tell if Watson will play for the Browns this season at all. One thing is for certain, the Browns are finally seemingly accepting the trade for Watson as what it is. Cleveland seems to be looking forward to the time that they can move off of the quarterback.
