Browns GM discusses hopes for Deshaun Watson with new OC

Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry has one main hope regarding quarterback Deshaun Watson, and it has little to do with the fact that the club replaced offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt with Ken Dorsey this offseason.

"I think the biggest thing is just him staying on the field, keeping (him) on the field," Berry said about Watson while speaking with Zac Jackson of The Athletic at the Senior Bowl. "Each year, we really do try and do as much self-assessment as possible on every area of the operation. So in good years and bad years, (we) will probably always tinker somewhere to some degree with what we think is best. But in terms of just Deshaun in particular, we’re excited. We just want to make sure he’s healthy."

Watson appeared in fewer than six full games this season before a shoulder injury shut him down in November. He and others then watched as veteran Joe Flacco gave the Browns their best quarterback play of the campaign en route to guiding the club to a playoff berth.

Of course, Watson missed the first 11 contests of the 2022 season while serving a suspension related to allegations of sexual misconduct during massage sessions. Across 12 total starts with the Browns, he has completed 204-of-341 pass attempts (59.8%) for 2,217 yards with 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions:

During stints as a quarterbacks coach and, later, as an offensive coordinator with the Carolina Panthers and Buffalo Bills, Dorsey helped signal-callers Cam Newton and Josh Allen emerge as MVP-caliber starters. If Dorsey fails to get similar production out of Watson next season, the Browns theoretically could look to move on from their current QB1 ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft.

"He’s been very creative in terms of the type of offensive system that he’s been able to implement," Berry said about Dorsey. "Even though it’s been what you could call a spread, dual-threat quarterback base (offense), how it looked in Carolina versus how it looked in Buffalo were much different. We think he’ll do a really nice job in the coordinator role for us."

It remains to be seen if head coach Kevin Stefanski will hand offensive play-calling duties to Dorsey later this year. Whatever Stefanski decides, the outcome of that choice could ultimately determine his and Watson's futures in Cleveland beyond Week 18 of the 2024 season.
