Browns GM hints Baker Mayfield could soon get contract extension?

The Cleveland Browns exercised the fifth-year option for quarterback Baker Mayfield last month, a move that links the former No. 1 overall pick with the franchise through at least the 2022 NFL season.

Cleveland signed All-Pro pass-rusher Myles Garrett and running back Kareem Hunt to contract extensions ahead of the 2020 campaign, and Browns general manager Andrew Berry hinted on the latest edition of the "Ross Tucker Football Podcast" that could be a sign of things to come, particularly as it pertains to the team's offensive leader.

"That's something you'll see more often than not with our organization," Berry explained, according to Ben Axelrod of WKYC. "With that being said, it's not a one-size-fits-all approach. We will deal with it on an individual basis."

Berry added "each situation truly is unique" when handling second contracts for current players. "But we do want to get into a habit of rewarding our own and identifying those guys early."

Mayfield is coming off his best year, to date, as a pro, as he guided the Browns to their first playoff victory since January 1995. ESPN's Jake Trotter predicted in February Cleveland will make the signal-caller "one of the NFL's highest-paid players" at some point before Week 1 of the upcoming season.
