For the first time in years, it looks like the Cleveland Browns have a clear vision for their team.
They're assessing their roster's needs, but they know they're not just one move away from being competitive. As such, they should be patient with head coach Todd Monken in his first year on the job.
That's why Sports Illustrated insider Albert Breer believes there's no place for an All-Pro, game-wrecking player like Myles Garrett on their roster.
In a recent appearance on "The Rich Eisen Show," Breer said that Garrett's timeline isn't in sync with his team's right now.
"I think they should trade [Garrett] because I don't think the timelines match up anymore," Breer explained. "If you look at it and you say, 'There's a good chance that the quarterback of the future isn't going to be on the roster until 2027, right?' Let's just say that that's the case. You look at what they did last year in trading the Travis Hunter pick which was, I think, basically an acknowledgment that that ... group had aged out. We need more young talent across our roster."
While Garrett is still at the peak of his powers and is coming off setting a mark for the most sacks in a single season, the fact of the matter is that he might be on the back end of his prime by the time the Browns are truly ready to compete.
"At that point, Myles Garrett is 32 years old," Breer said. "The timelines to me don't match up. Would you rather have Myles Garrett there chasing a championship at the end of his career ... or would you take three first-round picks for him right now to supercharge what I was just talking about?"
Barring a surprising turn, the Browns will be back in the quarterback market in 2027, presumably for a rookie.
They had the most impressive rookie class in the league last season, and they hope to add more impactful youngsters with nine draft picks in this class.
Moving Garrett while his value is at an all-time high can certainly help with that, especially given that they already have a pretty solid baseline for any bargaining after the failed Maxx Crosby trade.
Of course, their team won't be better without Garrett in the present, but sometimes, teams must take a step back to take two leaps forward.
