Browns HC Kevin Stefanski gives status update on QB Deshaun Watson

Questions continue to surround Browns QB Deshaun Watson as he deals with a shoulder injury that has kept him sidelined since Week 4. Head coach Kevin Stefanski shed some light on it following the team's 19-17 win over the 49ers Sunday.

"We're taking that day-to-day, being smart. He's doing a great job, was an awesome teammate today supporting his guys," Stefanski told reporters. "We'll see how it goes. Obviously, he's fighting like crazy to get back out there."

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Watson is dealing with a deep rotator cuff contusion that has made it difficult for him to drive the football when he throws. However, there is some belief that he could be ready to play as soon as next week when Cleveland takes on the Colts.

Stefanski's words didn't scream confidence, though, saying that the team is going to "be smart" with the injury.

The Browns do need Watson back as soon as possible. Backup QB PJ Walker threw for 192 yards and two interceptions in Week 6, and rookie QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson threw for 121 yards and three interceptions in Week 4.

Cleveland's defense is playing lights out, ranking as the best team in total yards allowed per game (200.4) and the fifth-best team in points allowed per game (15.4). If the Browns offense can catch up, they are certainly a team to be feared the rest of the season.

But the longer Watson is out, the bigger the mystery grows. Cleveland went all in on Watson by giving him a fully guaranteed $230 million contract. He must get healthy and be the player the team paid him to be.

Watson would have a great opportunity to bounce back in Week 7 when the Browns head to Indianapolis, which has allowed the 10th-most passing yards per game (243.7) in the league.
