Browns HC Kevin Stefanski shares major claim about Deshaun Watson

After quarterback Deshaun Watson helped the Cleveland Browns earn a come-from-behind 33-31 win at the division-rival Baltimore Ravens on Sunday afternoon, NFL insider Peter King of NBC Sports asked Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski if he ever wavered regarding Watson being "worth the money and the bad press" over the past year and a half.

"No," Stefanski responded. "I don’t know if there’s a more emphatic way to say, 'consistent confidence.' He wins football games. He’s done it his entire life – that’s just who he is. I have the utmost confidence in him. Always did."

The Browns mortgaged their future to replace Baker Mayfield with Watson in March 2022 and then gave Watson a five-year contract reportedly worth a fully guaranteed $230M. The 28-year-old missed the first 11 games of last season while serving a suspension related to allegations of sexual misconduct during massage sessions. Upon his return, he left much to be desired with his play. Most recently, Watson was inactive for nearly four complete games this fall due to a lingering injury in his throwing shoulder.

Watson's outing against Baltimore started poorly, as safety Kyle Hamilton nabbed a pick-six in the contest's opening minute.

However, Watson bounced back with a stellar second-half performance and guided the offense down the field for a walk-off field goal. When all was said and done, he completed 20-of-34 passes for 213 yards with a touchdown and an interception against Baltimore. He also added 37 yards on the ground.

After the victory that improved Cleveland to 6-3, Watson was spotted wearing a boot on his left foot. Per Michael Baca of the league's website, Watson said after the win that he'll "be fine" and be "ready to go" when the Browns host the 6-3 Pittsburgh Steelers this coming Sunday.

"Deshaun has that mentality that he’s just going to do whatever it takes to win," Stefanski told King. "He was battling through an ankle injury in that second half. He made plays with his feet. He scrambled. He found the open guys. He did what he does. A huge part of what he does is lead this football team. He was selected captain for a reason. I just saw him leading the football team there in the second half."

As of early Monday afternoon, oddschecker listed Cleveland as a four-point favorite against a Pittsburgh team that beat the Browns 26-22 in Week 2.
