The Cleveland Browns need a quarterback. They're likely to get one in next month's NFL Draft if that's the direction they choose to go, which will make at least one of the current signal callers on the roster expendable.
It would be hard to trade Deshaun Watson with his current contract status and injury, but it might be possible to unload Dorian Thompson-Robinson to gain a little extra piece of draft capital.
And that's exactly what Zac Jackson of The Athletic was thinking when he proposed a trade of the QB to the Raiders.
"Here’s an idea: The Browns trade Dorian Thompson-Robinson to the Raiders for a conditional seventh-round pick or a backup player at another position," Jackson wrote. "Thompson-Robinson is from Las Vegas and played at UCLA under Chip Kelly, the Raiders’ new offensive coordinator."
New Raiders head coach Pete Carroll has worked with young quarterbacks in the past, including Russell Wilson, and helped him develop into a Super Bowl champion and five-time Pro Bowler.
Plus, with the connection with OC Kelly, there's a level of familiarity.
DTR appeared in seven games last season with two starts. He finished 0-2 and completed just 51.7 percent of his passes for 440 yards, no touchdowns and six picks. But he was working behind a makeshift offensive line.
He couldn't produce the numbers from 2023 when he made three starts in eight appearances and went 1-2 with one touchdown and four interceptions before getting hurt and ending his season prematurely.
One of the most important assets for the Browns right now should be draft capital. If they can trade DTR for even a seventh-round pick it should be considered a win.
