Injuries just were not nice to the Cleveland Browns in 2023 and things are not off to a good start in 2024.
Early in the second quarter, backup center Luke Wypler had his ankle rolled up on and immediately hit the ground. The second-year center was out in an air cast and carted off the field as a result.
Just minutes later, the Browns ruled out Wypler with an ankle injury. It was an injury that did not look good and you could tell by his teammate’s reaction. Entering the preseason, Wypler was battling with Brian Allen for the backup center job behind Ethan Pocic. Cleveland waived Allen earlier in the week with an injury.
Following the game, Kevin Stefanski confirmed that the injury was a fractured ankle that would require surgery.
Wypler played in five games as a rookie last season with Cleveland and he made one start in the final game of the regular season against the Cincinnati Bengals. Cleveland selected Wypler out of Ohio State in the sixth-round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
The injury comes at a time when the Browns now lack depth at the position. Depending on the diagnosis of the injury, the Browns could be looking to add a center very soon. Zach Johnson took over for Wypler following the injury.
