Myles Garrett was a major talking point of the Cleveland Browns’ offseason following the trade request he made back in February. Despite the noise, the Browns were never going to move their franchise cornerstone—and they made that clear with a massive payday. Garrett received a four-year, $160 million extension that keeps him in Cleveland through the 2030 season.
Cleveland was never going to lose their defensive anchor, and the extension was always a matter of when, not if. The $40 million average per year (APY) makes Garrett the highest-paid defender in NFL history and gives him the second-richest non-quarterback contract behind only Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase.
Now, other top pass rushers are aiming to match—or surpass—that $40 million benchmark.
“I think he deserves whatever he’s earned,” Garrett said of Dallas Cowboys DE Micah Parsons in an interview with Abby Jones of DLLS Sports. “I mean, the guy is special. Once I got the chance to train with him, I’ve seen his work ethic, I’ve seen how he attacks the weights, running. He’s 100% committed to his craft and getting better every day, and [he’s] someone who produces on the field and has that dedication to the game. He should get every penny he’s owed.”
Garrett is widely regarded as the NFL’s premier pass rusher, but Parsons isn’t far behind—arguably the second-best, and no lower than third. The former Penn State standout has 52.5 sacks in four seasons and has recorded at least 12 sacks each year. Entering the fifth year of his rookie contract, Parsons is in line for a huge extension—one that Garrett supports.
NFL players often root for others at their position to get paid. Rising contract numbers benefit everyone, especially at premium positions like edge rusher. The market continues to climb, and we’ve now reached a point where top-tier pass rushers are earning more than $40 million annually. It’s fitting—after all, they are the quarterbacks of the defense.
