Browns OL gets enormous fine from preseason action

The NFL typically shies away from handing out large fines for actions from preseason games, but they made an exception for one Cleveland Browns offensive lineman.

Browns lineman Tytus Howard was fined $12,537 by the league for unnecessary roughness in the team’s first preseason game against the Chicago Bears. Howard was assessed a penalty for tripping on the play in question during the game. That is the largest fine the NFL has handed out this preseason, though they have yet to announce any fines from the third and final slate of games.

Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk noted that the league rarely hands out such large fines in preseason, as players are not yet receiving regular paychecks. The league clearly felt Howard’s play was dangerous enough to warrant the punishment, though.

As hefty as Howard’s fine is, it is far from the biggest that has been handed out over a preseason game.

Howard spent the first seven years of his career with the Texans. Houston traded him to Cleveland in the offseason.
