The debate about kneeling during the national anthem will continue well into the NFL season, and while president Donald Trump has voiced his displeasure with players kneeling, Cleveland Browns owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam plan to support anyone who decides to take a knee.
Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield has said multiple times that he'll be kneeling during the national anthem this season to protest racial inequality and police brutality. The Haslam's were asked about Mayfield's plans on Sunday and said the organization will fully support him.
"One of the great things about this country, one of the many great things, is the ability to have freedom of speech and to be able to express yourself, so we're gonna support our players," Jimmy said, according to TMZ Sports.
A majority of players around the league have voiced their opinions and have decided they'll be taking a knee before games in 2020.
While the Haslam's support their players, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was initially against players kneeling during the anthem. However, he recently said he's reconsidering his stance after discussions with multiple powerful people, including former U.S. presidents.
During the NBA's season resume in Orlando, nearly all players and coaches have taken a knee during the national anthem to protest racial inequality. Similarly, players in Major League Soccer have done the same, and even a few NHLer's decided to take a knee when their season resumed earlier this month.
