Browns’ Quarterback Deshaun Watson And Cleveland’s Moral Dilemma

After the Week 2 preseason game against the Buffalo Bills, Watson’s comments struck a nerve with Browns fans. He suggested he expected a different level of “acceptance” in Cleveland.

“I don’t regret anything in my life,” Watson said of coming to Cleveland. “I think the Lord put me through situations for a reason, so I don’t regret anything at all. I had different thoughts on how it was going to be, but you know, it is what it is. Sometimes you know the tables turn, and I’m patient enough because I’m a child of God to wait for that time to change.”

The remarks drew some heavy criticism, and on Aug. 24, after being named the Browns’ starting quarterback for Week 1, Watson attempted to walk back his comment. Fans weren’t inclined to accept words alone after four turbulent years.

“I just think human nature and myself being very emotional, putting up a lot of time these last two years to get back, spend time in this facility, in the city, meeting a lot of different people in the community, I thought I was going to get a little different response,” Watson stated during his Aug. 24 press conference. “But I think my emotions got the best of me, and my comments weren’t intended to go at any of the fans around the city, because there’s been a lot of great fans that have been supporting me.”

The former Clemson Tiger is still owed $46 million for the 2026 season, but he stated he wants to focus on football and putting his best product on the field.

During Amazon Prime Video’s broadcast between the Patriots and Browns, Ryan Fitzpatrick shared his thoughts on the Browns quarterback situation. He expressed little faith in Watson, who turns 31 in September, being able to keep the starting gig for the entire season.

“Once Watson fails, Shedeur’s gonna jump into this thing, and he’s going to be the guy,” Fitzpatrick said. “And this city is gonna be behind him.”

The Browns Quarterback Situation Was Improved In The Offseason

The Browns are not only entering the 2025 season with a completely new starting offensive line, but they also added more offensive weapons through the NFL Draft. They selected KC Conception and Denzel Boston to pair with second-year tight end Harold Fannin Jr. and running back Quinshon Judkins.

Kirk Herbstreit shared his thoughts on the Browns quarterback situation during the preseason matchup: “I know that this has been a disaster. One of the worst trades maybe in the history of the NFL, but he’s still a 30-year-old,” he said. “At one point, he was one of the top quarterbacks in the league with 72 career starts, and we’ll see what he can do in Todd Monken’s offense.”

One thing is evident: Watson, who was booed during his appearance against the Bills last Saturday, will most certainly be booed again when the Browns make their home debut in Week 3 against the Panthers.
