The decision to start Winston at quarterback comes on the heels of the Browns losing their other two quarterbacks to injuries during a Week 7 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
Starter Deshaun Watson injured his Achilles and will miss the remainder of the season while Dorian Thompson-Robinson injured a finger on his throwing hand. Winston took over after Thompson-Robinson's injury and led Cleveland on a touchdown drive during the team's final series.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski initially told reporters that he would not make a QB decision until he received a status update on Thompson-Robinson, but it appears Winston is set to take over for the struggling franchise.
The Browns are 1-6 and have failed to score more than 18 points in a game all season. Converting only 23.7% of their third-down attempts, the Browns are hoping the former No. 1 overall pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015 can give them production. Cleveland has only six TD passes this season.
In nine-plus seasons in the NFL. Winston has passed for 22,187 yards and thrown for 142 touchdowns, but he has tossed 99 interceptions. He also has been sacked 196 times.
If Winston can be less turnover prone and have enough time in the pocket to operate the offense, he should provide the Browns with more opportunities to score. The potential is there, especially if Winston can replicate his time in New Orleans, when he threw 14 touchdown passes and only three interceptions in limited appearances during the 2021 season.
Cleveland must find a spark for a struggling offense that lacks firepower at wide receiver after last week's trade of No. 1 receiver Amari Cooper to the Buffalo Bills.
