Friday evening marked the return of Cleveland Browns football, and it went well for the team in Northeast Ohio. Rookie QB Shedeur Sanders got the start and played nearly three quarters in the Browns’ 30-10 win over the Carolina Panthers.
Carolina played its starters for a couple of drives, while the Browns rested most of theirs, aside from rookies like DT Mason Graham and LB Carson Schwesinger.
The first preseason game was a chance for younger players and fringe roster hopefuls to make an impact. One undrafted free agent battling for a spot certainly left his mark — and dodged a potentially serious injury in the process.
One of the better plays of the game came on a 30-yard reception by Luke Floriea, who made a one-handed grab while fully extending. It was a beautiful throw from Sanders and a highlight that showed why Floriea has been garnering attention during training camp. After the play, Floriea appeared to tweak his hamstring and exited the game. The rookie from Kent State was eventually ruled out but assured it was nothing to worry about.

“It’s good. It’s good. It just cramped up a little bit. Need to hydrate better during the week. Take care of myself better. It’s something to learn from,” Floriea said after the game.

Cleveland’s wide receiver room remains open after the obvious locks to make the roster, such as Jerry Jeudy, Cedric Tillman, and Jamari Thrash. Diontae Johnson, Kaden Davis, David Bell, DeAndre Carter, and Floriea are all competing for spots. The Browns will also have the practice squad as an option for players who might clear waivers after roster cuts.
Floriea has been a riser during training camp. The 5-foot-8 wideout from Mentor, Ohio, is a sure-handed receiver with return ability. Between Floriea and Davis — who caught two touchdowns Friday night — the Browns will have some tough decisions to make at the end of the month.
