Browns' Shedeur Sanders addresses speeding incidents, lack of practice reps with starters

Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry raised eyebrows on Thursday when he said that Shedeur Sanders' being cited for speeding in Ohio twice last month was "just not smart" behavior.

While speaking with reporters at training camp on Friday, Sanders was asked about those incidents.

"I definitely learned not to drive fast at all," Sanders acknowledged via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "So I really don’t even drive that much anymore. ...I definitely follow the rules, and I hope everybody learned from my situation."

Sanders' on-the-road activities allegedly didn't impact how the coaching staff views the 2025 fifth-round draft pick regarding the four-way competition for Cleveland's starting quarterback job between veteran Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett and 2025 third-rounder Dillon Gabriel. That said, it's clear that Sanders is currently the club's last choice at the position.

Sanders was asked about not receiving reps with the starters early in training camp.

"I don't think that's my place to answer, to give the answer to that," Sanders responded, per ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi. "I feel like that it's not in my control, so I'm not going to think about that or even have that in my thought process of why it is. There's a lot of people who want to have the opportunity to be at this level, and I'm here and I'm thankful to have the opportunity. So, whenever that is, that is."

While it seems that only Flacco or Pickett can truly win the QB1 gig this summer, barring an injury, Berry confirmed on Thursday that all four signal-callers could be on the active roster when the Browns open the regular season against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 7.

"It doesn't make me feel down or left out because I know who I am as a person," Sanders added about being the only Cleveland quarterback who hasn't taken a first-team snap during drills. "I know who I am as an individual, and I know what I could bring to this team. So, I can never feel less than in any circumstance."

If nothing else, Sanders passed his first media-related test of training camp. Whether that will result in the 23-year-old getting reps with the first-team offense remains to be seen.
