Browns: Shelby Harris excited to play for Jim Schwartz

There was one area the Cleveland Browns had to improve in for this upcoming season, their defensive line. That is why it was not a surprise to see the aggressive approach from the Browns this offseason.

Cleveland started by signing Dalvin Tomlinson and Ogbo Okoronkwo to multi-year deals. Za’Darius Smith was later acquired to help bolster their pass rush. Identifying that more help was needed on the defensive interior, the Browns recently agreed to a deal with veteran defensive tackle Shelby Harris. Harris was not shy about his decision to come to Cleveland. Not only was Harris complimentary of the Browns’ chances at being competitive, he specifically mentioned new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz.

“I felt like out of all the teams I was talking to they’re the most primed to win. How can I turn down the chance to play with those guys up front and playing in Coach Schwartz’ defense?”

Harris would also mention that his scheme is “a dream to play in“. Schwartz comes in to help overhaul a unit that has been a clear liability for far too long. Joe Woods was not good enough, and it was obvious that a change was necessary. The fact that players have gone out of their way to praise his style and defensive scheme should bode well moving forward.

The situation for Cleveland’s defensive front has significantly improved over recent years. Myles Garrett was the only player who could do much of anything consistently. Jadeveon Clowney’s first year was a mirage, as his second season was more indicative of the player he is. Additionally, the active dismantling of their defensive tackles did not help matters. Not being able to generate any pressure up the middle has been an issue for Cleveland’s defense. Now that they have Tomlinson and Harris occupying the starting spots on their interior should lead to better results for everyone on that side of the ball.

With the more stable state of the Browns’ defense, things appear to be going in the proper direction. The additions made by the front office, coaching and personnel-wise, should allow the defense to stop underachieving.
