The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are in the Super Bowl for the first time since 2003, largely because of Tom Brady and Bruce Arians. However, many have, and will continue to, overlook offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich, who is just as responsible for the Buccaneers' success as the two people aforementioned.
Arians was asked about his coaching staff on Monday. After praising the entire group, Arians emphasized the fact that Leftwich didn't receive any head-coaching interviews, which he thinks is ridiculous.
"I was very, very p**sed that Byron didn't at least get an interview this year," Arians said, according to Pro Football Talk. "For the job that he's done . . . I think I get way too much credit and so does Tom Brady for the job that Byron has done. Hopefully next year people will see that he took Jameis Winston and broke every single record here, scoring and passing, and now Tom has broken both. He's done a fantastic job, he's everything supposedly what people are looking for, although this year was kind of a defensive cycle."
Leftwich has been Tampa Bay's offensive coordinator since 2019. In his first season with the franchise, the Buccaneers' offense led the NFL in passing offense (302.8 yards per game) and ranked third in total offense (397.9 yards per game). The team also tied for third in the league in scoring at 28.6 points per contest.
This season, the Buccaneers offense ranked second in passing offense (289.1 points per game) and third in scoring at 30.8 points per game.
A Super Bowl win would likely put Leftwich on the radar for the 2021 coaching carousel. However, that doesn't mean he'll receive interviews.
Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy has interviewed with several teams over the last two seasons and has failed to land a head coaching gig. So while it's possible Leftwich becomes a head coaching candidate in 2021, nothing is certain.
