Bruce Arians wanted to draft Patrick Mahomes when he was Cardinals HC?

The Arizona Cardinals would look very different right now if Patrick Mahomes were their quarterback. The Kansas City Chiefs also would look different, and they might not have won the Super Bowl last season without the former MVP.

Tampa Bay is preparing to take on Mahomes and the Chiefs on Sunday, and Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians spent the week reflecting on what could have been.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Arians, who coached the Arizona Cardinals in 2017, was reportedly planning to select Mahomes with the 13th overall pick in the draft. Before the draft, the Cardinals sent Arians and Michael Bidwell to Texas Tech to work out the 25-year-old.

Arizona attempted to move up in that draft to land Mahomes, but Kansas City beat the Cardinals to it, selecting him with the 10th overall pick. It was a franchise-altering decision for the Chiefs, putting them on the path to building a dynasty, something only the New England Patriots have done in the last two decades.

When Arians didn't land Mahomes while with the Cardinals, the team selected Haason Reddick with the 13th overall pick. They later selected Josh Rosen as their quarterback in 2018, and that experiment failed.

Things might have worked out for the best, though. The Cardinals now have a potential MVP quarterback of their own in Kyler Murray, who has led the team to a 6-4 record entering Sunday's game against the Patriots.
