Just a year ago, the Philadelphia Eagles thought they had their Haason Reddick replacement locked in when they brought in Bryce Huff on a big three-year, $51 million deal. At the time, it looked like one of the smartest moves of NFL free agency.
But things didn’t exactly go according to plan.
Huff’s 2024 season fell way short of the hype. He finished with just 2.5 sacks in 12 games, which was certainly not what the Eagles had in mind when they handed him that kind of money. On top of that, a nagging wrist injury kept him sidelined for five games and clearly limited his impact when he was out there.
Between the dip in production, nagging injuries, and the feeling that Huff just wasn’t the right fit for their defensive scheme, the Eagles decided to move on. They ended up shipping the 25-year-old edge rusher to the 49ers for a mid-round draft pick.
However, if it were up to Huff, he would have been out of there a lot sooner.
"If I'm being 100 percent honest with you, I wanted a trade like fairly early on." Huff said in a recent interview with TheSFNiners.
"Just cause of how things went in Philly, I knew pretty early on it wasn't a fit. I knew a trade wasn't going to happen during the [2024] season. But I talked to my agent about it and was like, when it's all set and done, I might need to step back to put myself in the best position... I kind of knew where it was headed fairly early on into the season."
This doesn't come by much of a surprise considering there were plenty of rumblings he wasn't happy.
He all but confirmed the rumors when he posted a “peace out” photo to Philly shortly after the trade went down.
Now in San Francisco, Huff should be in a much better spot, especially reuniting with Robert Saleh, a coach he knows all too well after he drafted him to the New York Jets.
