Quarterback Baker Mayfield is on pace to reach a career high for total rushing yards in a single regular season and may set a Tampa Bay Buccaneers franchise record in the process.
During a recent appearance on the "Rearview" podcast, Mayfield offered a hilarious description of what goes on in his head when he takes off scrambling during a game.
"Just keep running," Mayfield explained, as shared by the JoeBucsFan website. "Forrest Gump until they get me. But yeah, just trying to take advantage of the moments, just split the gap. Anything it takes to try and win a ballgame."
In the fourth quarter of Tampa Bay's home game versus the New York Jets in Week 3, Mayfield scrambled for 33 yards to get his team into field-goal range. While that attempt ultimately led to a Jets touchdown, Mayfield drove the Buccaneers offense back down the field before Chase McLaughlin kicked the hosts to a 29-27 victory that improved them to 3-0 on the season.
According to the StatMuse website, only three quarterbacks rushed for more yards than Mayfield (116) over the campaign's first three weeks. If Mayfield stays healthy, he could break Steve Young's Buccaneers franchise record for rushing yards by a quarterback in a single season (425).
Of course, that could prove to be one big "if." Mayfield was already banged up coming off Tampa Bay's Week 2 win over the Houston Texans before he was listed as a limited participant for Wednesday's practice due to a right biceps issue. As of Thursday afternoon, Mayfield seemed to be on track to play in this coming Sunday's home game versus the 3-0 Philadelphia Eagles.
"I wouldn’t necessarily say I have an extra gear," Mayfield added during the podcast. "I get zero to 100 pretty quick. But that 100 percent is not real fast. Just trying to be elusive, extend plays on third downs. And then the long [run on Sunday against the Jets], I figure I’m going to be tackled by now or have to slide to keep the clock rolling in that situation. And then all of a sudden there’s a lane. I’m like, 'Oh gosh. okay.' Like, I don’t know what to do with my hands type things."
Mayfield will look for some open lanes as he tries to guide Tampa Bay to a 4-0 record. As of Thursday afternoon, ESPN BET had the Buccaneers as 3.5-point underdogs versus the defending Super Bowl champions.
