Buccaneers’ Baker Mayfield Makes Bold Statement On Chris Godwin
Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield made a concerted effort to get the ball to wide receiver Chris Godwin during the team’s win over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday afternoon, and afterward, Mayfield spoke about his connection with Godwin.

“As always, we have stuff involved for Chris in the game plan,” Mayfield told reporters, via Heavy.com. “Like I said, early on in the game, they were only keyed on Mike [Evans], so there was some man-coverage stuff we were able to get Chris open, some opportunities. Take advantage of that. Chris and Mike are our two best receivers, so whenever you can get the ball to them, you try and do it.”

Godwin led all Buccaneers receivers with five catches for 53 yards in the 29-25 victory.

This comes one week after Godwin went catchless on just three targets in a win over the Carolina Panthers, which prompted Godwin’s wife, Mariah, to criticize head coach Todd Bowles and accuse him of of lying about Godwin’s limited Week 13 role.

On the season overall, Godwin has caught 58 passes for 659 yards and a touchdown.

The 27-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Penn State, was selected by Tampa Bay in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

After a couple of solid years to begin his career, Chris Godwin broke out in his third season, hauling in 86 receptions for 1,333 yards and nine scores en route to a Pro Bowl appearance.

He has put together a couple of more 1,000-yard campaigns since then, including last year when he snared 104 balls for 1,023 yards and three touchdowns.

The Bucs improved to 6-7 with their win over the Falcons and moved into first place in the NFC South due to owning tiebreakers over Atlanta and the New Orleans Saints, both of whom are also 6-7.

The Buccaneers will take on the Green Bay Packers next weekend.
