The dealings of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Jacksonville Jaguars have been somewhat intertwined this offseason. Most notably, the Liam Coen saga bubbled some tensions, especially on the Tampa Bay side.
The Bucs took one of the more shocking blows of the offseason when Liam Coen left the team for the Jaguars after an initial promise to remain with the franchise. Coen steps into the head coaching spot in Jacksonville with a hefty contract and some additional responsibilities.
One of those entailed helping owner Shahid Khan identify a new general manager. Among an early list of candidates for the vacancy was Bucs assistant general manager Mike Greenberg.
However, the Bucs will not be poached this time. Greenberg has withdrawn his name from consideration for the position, choosing to remain in Tampa Bay. Unlike the situation with Coen where Jacksonville carried on in a desperate attempt to maintain him, there will be no such drama this time around.
Greenberg's decision does not come from any ill will toward Coen or the Jaguars, according to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times.
"It had more to with his 15 years with the Bucs and his loyalty to the Glazer family, GM Jason Licht and what they have built here and nothing to do with any negative impressions about Liam Coen or the Jaguars organization. He was honored to be considered."
This is a big victory for Jason Licht and the Bucs' front office who had already sustained a significant loss the same week of Coen's departure. Greenberg's fellow assistant general manager left Tampa Bay to become the general manager for the Las Vegas Raiders and work with former Bucs' quarterback Tom Brady.
Greenberg's 15 seasons with the Bucs have seen a multitude of successes, especially over the past decade. The Bucs signed Brady in the 2020 offseason and would go on to win Super Bowl LV that season.
Following that season, the Bucs have rattled off four straight NFC South titles, reclaiming that crown this past season. As Tampa Bay progresses forward Greenberg factors to be a key piece in the franchise's immediate future.
