The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are bolstering their running back corps with the signing of Jase McClellan, a sixth-round pick from the Atlanta Falcons in the 2024 NFL Draft, reports ESPN insider Adam Schefter. This move comes after Rachaad White suffered a groin injury during the team’s preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans and is expected to be sidelined for a while.
McClellan, 23, played in just two games for the Falcons last season, rushing 13 times for 32 yards, but has shown promise in his college career with Alabama, recording 166 carries for 803 yards and six touchdowns in his final season.
Despite being sidelined with a groin injury, White is expected to make a swift recovery, with head coach Todd Bowles labeling his status as “day-to-day”. This positive prognosis should give the Bucs a boost as they navigate the upcoming games without their second-year running back.
With White expected to return soon from his groin injury, the Buccaneers currently have a quintet of running backs in camp, consisting of White, Bucky Irving, Sean Tucker, Josh Williams, and Owen Wright. Given this roster, the signing of another running back will provide valuable depth.
Despite limited opportunities behind Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier in Atlanta, McClellan has shown promise as a capable running back. In his rookie season, McClellan rushed for 32 yards on 13 attempts, averaging 2.5 yards per carry. Although he didn’t score any rushing touchdowns, his performance indicates potential for future contributions. With more touches, McClellan could prove to be a valuable asset to the team.
McClellan might not be a long-term fit for the Buccaneers, but he could provide valuable depth, particularly on the practice squad. Having him around could pay dividends later in the season if injuries arise or other teams’ needs align for potential trades.
