Buccaneers’ Bucky Irving Named as Ideal Franchise ‘Building Block’

Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Bucky Irving had a huge rookie season, starting as the backup before taking over as the starter and surpassing Rachaad White for the top spot.

Irving was a versatile threat on the field, showcasing his dynamic running ability with 1,122 yards and 8 touchdowns on the ground, while also proving to be a reliable target out of the backfield with 47 receptions for 392 yards.

Entering his second season, Irving is poised to take on a prominent role in Offensive Coordinator Josh Grizzard’s scheme, potentially serving as a key component to set up the passing game with Baker Mayfield at the helm.

Irving’s potential has caught attention, with Moe Moton of Bleacher Report recognizing him as the Buccaneers’ most promising building block for the future.

“As a rookie last season, Bucky Irving took over the lead role in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers backfield. He led the team in rushing (1,122) and scrimmage yards (1,514). Irving was more productive and efficient with his carries than Rachaad White, averaging 5.4 yards per carry compared to 4.3 yards per rush attempt for his running mate. The two tailbacks posted similar numbers in catches and receiving yards, but White recorded six touchdown receptions. Nonetheless, White seems like he’s already eyeing free agency with the thought that the upcoming term will be his last year in Tampa Bay.”

Moton continued,

“Quarterback Baker Mayfield will be throwing to Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Jalen McMillan, Emeka Egbuka and Cade Otton in a potentially explosive passing attack. Still, Tampa Bay’s offense needs balance. Irving has shown he can be the featured tailback in a top-four rushing attack. If White moves on in free agency next offseason, Irving could handle 300-plus touches in 2026 and beyond.”

We’ve seen successful offenses build around dominant running backs like Ezekiel Elliott, Saquon Barkley, and Derrick Henry. Could Irving follow a similar path? With Baker Mayfield’s arsenal of receivers, the Buccaneers might lean on a more balanced approach, but Irving is still poised to play a key role in the offense under Josh Grizzard’s direction. He could be the spark that drives the offense’s explosive plays in 2025. Given Irving’s talent, building the offense around him would be a solid strategy for the Buccaneers.
