As the 2026 NFL Draft approaches, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are zeroing in on several key positions to bolster their roster and solidify their competitive future.

With the 15th overall pick in the first round, alongside the 46th and 77th selections, the Bucs are poised to make impactful additions. While some mock drafts have explored offensive talent, the overarching sentiment among analysts and fans points towards a defensive focus. Especially after key departures and a season that highlighted defensive shortcomings.

Here’s a breakdown of the positions the Buccaneers are most likely to target:
  • Edge Rusher: This is arguably the most critical need for the Buccaneers. After some free agency moves the team is actively looking to improve its ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks. Prospects like Cashius Howell (Texas A&M) and Akheem Mesidor (Miami) are frequently linked to Tampa Bay in early mock drafts. The coaching staff, particularly Head Coach Todd Bowles, values disruptive pass rushers.
  • Linebacker: With uncertainties surrounding veteran Lavonte David’s future and depth concerns, linebacker remains a high priority. While the team did sign Alex Anzalone, the need for a long-term solution is evident. Ohio State’s Sonny Styles and Texas’ Anthony Hill Jr. are names that have surfaced as potential targets, offering versatility and tackling prowess.
  • Cornerback/Safety (Secondary): Improving the defensive backfield is another area of focus. Fans have expressed concern about the current secondary, and mock drafts suggest adding talent here. Players like Tennessee’s Jermod McCoy (cornerback) and Oregon’s Dillon Thieneman (safety) are being considered to provide better coverage and depth.
  • Offensive Line (Guard/Center): Although not as frequently highlighted as defensive needs, the offensive line, specifically guard and center, has been mentioned by fans as an area requiring attention due to injuries and a desire for improved depth. Penn State’s Olaivavega Ioane (interior lineman) and Syracuse’s TJ Ferguson (guard) have appeared in some mock drafts.
  • Wide Receiver/Tight End: The departure of Mike Evans has created a void at wide receiver, leading some to suggest targeting a dynamic pass-catcher. While not a consensus first-round pick, Oregon tight end Kenyon Sadiq has garnered significant attention due to his athleticism and ability to create mismatches, especially in a system that utilizes multiple tight ends. However, many believe that a tight end in the first round would be a “luxury pick” given pressing defensive needs.

Summary

General Manager Jason Licht has consistently emphasized that the draft is the foundational pillar of roster construction. This has benefited the team in most cases, except for EDGE rushers. Hopefully Licht has better success with drafting pass rushers in 2026.
