Buccaneers Gave Kyle Trask ‘Plenty of Chances’

Myles Simmons isn’t buying the narrative from Kyle Trask fans who claim the Buccaneers didn’t give him a shot.

On PFT Live, Simmons joined host Mike Florio. Simmons dismissed the notion that Trask was unfairly treated, saying Trask had a clear path to staying with the Buccaneers: outperform Baker Mayfield or Teddy Bridgewater in practice and preseason games.

Teams don’t cut better quarterbacks loose,” Simmons asserted, referencing Trask’s recent release. Florio countered that Trask’s chances of staying with the team were slim to none, but Simmons disagreed.

“I mean, I would kind of disagree with he never got a chance to play,” Simmons stated. “He did have a chance to play. He could have beaten out Baker Mayfield. And he didn’t.”

Simmons continued,

“I mean, it’s true. You know, you you have a chance to earn a spot. And if you don’t outperform your competition, then you don’t play. And that’s it.”

Simmons shrugged off the idea of a conspiracy against Trask as nonsensical. Instead, he pointed to Dan Campbell’s comments about Hendon Hooker, another quarterback released recently, suggesting teams have a limited window to give players to develop before moving on.

“[The Bucs] had Kyle Trask for his entire rookie contract. They brought him back for another season this year. And if you’re not performing well enough to be the backup at this point, and you think that there’s another player who’s out there who’s going to be a better option for you to [be a] backup, like, that’s it’s not good.”

Simmons continued,

“I think there are plenty of chances to stay on the roster as a backup. [Trask] just didn’t earn it.”

Simmons added that quarterbacks need to earn their coaches’ trust through performance, starting with the practice field. Trask, according to Simmons, failed to do so.

Florio pointed out that the biggest downside of the Trask era is the opportunity cost of using a second-round pick on him in 2021, when that pick could have landed a player ready to contribute immediately and potentially help the Bucs win back-to-back championships.

The BR Rub

Gators’ fans are arguably one of the most loyal, and vocal in college football. But C’MON MAN with the conspiracy theories. NFL franchises, don’t draft or sign players to screw them over. That logic is just dumb. But we get passion, it’s what drives fandom.

Reality is, Trask wasn’t up to the task in Tampa. Proven by the fact that if Trask was what these fans thought he was, why wasn’t he snatched up immediately following his release? Unless of course this conspiracy these fans are holding onto now includes all 32 teams. See how dumb that sounds? Like 32 billion dollar organizations collectively said, “let’s screw this guy over”. Just a dumb take.

Kyle Trask will end up where his talent takes him, THAT’S the reality. Any other narrative is just random chodes whining on the internet.
