Back in December, Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles went viral when he unexpectedly unleashed an expletive-laden rant during the club's collapse that resulted in it missing the playoffs.
During a recent appearance on the "Sports Day Tampa Bay" podcast, Bowles may have intentionally or unintentionally revealed the reason for why he was so angry at that particular moment.
"If we can prepare and we can execute, and we don’t look at the names on people’s helmets, and we can play the same every week and learn how to finish off games and close games out — instead of getting a lead and just taking plays off, or not having a lead and having to come back late," Bowles explained, per the JoeBucsFan website.
Shortly after a Buccaneers team that entered its Week 9 bye at 6-2 fell to 7-7 via a disheartening 29-28 loss to the Atlanta Falcons (5-9) on Dec. 11, Bowles referred to his club's effort as "inexcusable." He also challenged his players at the time to "look in the f------ mirror."
Those players responded by losing two more games to fall to 7-9, and Tampa Bay ultimately missed out on being part of the postseason tournament.
It's worth mentioning that the Buccaneers dealt with an onslaught of injuries last fall. Perhaps most notably, quarterback Baker Mayfield suffered an injury to his non-throwing shoulder in a Week 12 defeat that impacted his play through the end of the campaign.
Nevertheless, Bowles seemingly wants to see better efforts from his squad whenever it experiences hardships during the upcoming season.
"You just want to play four quarters, and you want to go out there," Bowles added during his comments. "And I think we have those types of alpha dogs on our team right now that will make this team to elevate to that. When they start coaching themselves and don’t need too much coaching on the sideline, that’s when you know you’ve arrived."
Bowles' seat could be quite warm when Week 1 of the 2026 season arrives. It sounds like he may not leave much unsaid behind the scenes during what could be his final campaign in his current role.
