Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians not ready to retire anytime soon

Head coach Bruce Arians guided the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a Super Bowl LV victory over the Kansas City Chiefs at the age of 68 years old. Naturally some wondered then and this spring if he could have one foot already in retirement even as he prepares the Bucs for their title defense.

Arians made it clear on a recent edition of the "Pewter Report Podcast" the opposite is accurate and that his future isn't linked with whatever seven-time champion Tom Brady intends to do past the 2021 season.

"I don’t have any plans on retiring," Arians explained. "It’s just, when do I not want to go back to work? When I’m not excited about going back to work then I’m cheating somebody. I’m cheating the Glazer family, I’m cheating my players. Right now I can’t wait to get back to work. I don’t know when that’s going to happen, but no, I’m not tied to any players."

In late March, Arians suggested Tampa Bay could spend a first-round draft pick on a quarterback who would learn behind Brady. That didn't happen, but the Buccaneers did use a second-rounder to acquire Florida Gators signal-caller Kyle Trask.

"I could get extremely excited about having another young quarterback and going to war with one," Arians added. "I’ll be honest with you. I’d be excited to take (backup QB) Blaine Gabbert to war because I love Blaine Gabbert. I think he is the most underrated player in the NFL. So yeah, when it's not fun, then it will be time."

Arians also said he passed his latest health exam and is good to go for what's next on the football calendar.
