Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers did it again! They pulled off an epic comeback, beating the New York Jets 29-27 in Week 3 at Raymond James Stadium. After taking a commanding 26-13 lead with just over 6 minutes left, the Jets stormed back with an offensive touchdown and a blocked field goal returned for a score, making it a nail-biter. But Mayfield, fueled by personal motivation, led the Bucs on a game-winning drive, securing their third straight win with a late-score twist.
Mayfield’s performance was particularly sweet, given his history with Jets defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, who cut him from the Carolina Panthers in 2022.
Mayfield lit up when asked about the Buccaneers’ win over the Jets, saying it felt amazing to get the victory for Coach Todd Bowles, who previously led the Jets. But what really got him fired up was facing off against Steve Wilks, the Jets’ defensive coordinator who cut him loose back in Carolina. ‘I loved it,’ Mayfield said, clearly still fueled by the past.
“I loved it. Also, their D-coordinator was the one who cut me in Carolina, so a lot of stuff was personal today. Haason Reddick, former Jet — a lot of people,” Mayfield stated.
Mayfield’s brief stint with the Panthers in 2022 ended abruptly when interim head coach Steve Wilks benched him in favor of Sam Darnold and P.J. Walker. Not exactly a ringing endorsement from Wilks, who ultimately granted Mayfield his release. Guess you could say their working relationship didn’t exactly sparkle.
Mayfield has not forgotten.
