The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be without Emeka Egbuka for Sunday’s divisional matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. The second-year receiver missed Friday’s practice and was officially ruled out.

Tampa Bay Receiver Suffers Setback Before Week Eight

Egbuka has dealt with multiple injuries recently, including a concussion. Although he has cleared the league’s concussion protocol, his foot remains an obstacle to returning to the lineup.

Head coach Todd Bowles confirmed the decision following Friday’s final practice. The Buccaneers are taking a cautious approach rather than risking further complications.

“Emeka will be out this week,” said head coach Todd Bowles after the final practice of the week on Friday, via the team’s website. “He was never full-speed, [is] still recovering. He cleared concussion protocol, so it’s just his foot.”

Egbuka’s Progress Ends With Another Missed Game

Egbuka’s practice participation initially offered encouragement that he could return against Atlanta. He progressed through limited work and eventually shed his non-contact jersey during Thursday’s practice.

However, the receiver’s absence on Friday ended those hopes. Despite showing improvement earlier in the week, Egbuka apparently wasn’t healthy enough to handle a full practice before Sunday’s game.

Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times previously reported Egbuka’s limited participation as he worked toward returning after missing Week Seven against Carolina. His progress suggested a potential return was approaching, but the lingering foot problem ultimately proved too significant.

Sunday’s absence will mark another interruption in what has otherwise been an important season for the young receiver. Tampa Bay has little incentive to rush him back before he can contribute without risking another setback.

Ted Hurst Could Receive More Opportunities

With Egbuka unavailable, rookie wide receiver Ted Hurst could see an expanded role against Atlanta. The third-round selection provides Tampa Bay with another option as the offense adjusts its receiving rotation.

Egbuka’s workload demonstrates why his absence matters, even when his overall production hasn’t been overwhelming. He has received 49 targets this season, including 16 in Week Six.

His campaign also includes a season-best 63-yard performance against Cincinnati in Week One. Those opportunities reflect the coaching staff’s willingness to involve him heavily in the passing game.

Buccaneers Provide Additional Injury Updates

Egbuka isn’t the only Tampa Bay player whose availability could affect Sunday’s matchup. Safety Antoine Winfield Jr. is ready to return after missing the previous three games.

Offensive tackle Luke Goedeke could also make his return, although the final decision will come before kickoff. Both Goedeke and running back Kenneth Gainwell are listed as questionable.

Bowles confirmed that Gainwell completed a full practice Friday while recovering from a hip injury. Gainwell missed Wednesday’s session before being limited on Thursday, making Friday’s improvement an encouraging development.

The Buccaneers will evaluate Goedeke during pregame preparations before determining whether he can play. Meanwhile, Winfield’s return would provide a significant boost to a defense preparing for Atlanta’s talented offensive playmakers.

With Egbuka officially ruled out, Tampa Bay must adjust its receiving plans while monitoring two questionable players. The Buccaneers now face an important divisional test without one of their most heavily targeted young receivers.
