Buccaneers safety Logan Ryan files grievance against Giants

Veteran cornerback-turned-safety Logan Ryan spent the past two NFL seasons with the New York Giants and even put pen to paper on a three-year extension with the club in December 2020. However, the two sides parted ways last month when the Giants elected to go in a different direction defensively.

Ryan ultimately signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers "to win a championship," but it appears his departure from New York wasn't as amicable as some first thought.

According to Jordan Raanan of ESPN, Ryan has filed a grievance against the Giants regarding guaranteed money. The Athletic's Dan Duggan offered more information:

Logan Ryan has filed a grievance against the Giants, per sources.

Ryan, who was released on March 17, had $5.5M of his 2022 salary fully guaranteed, while $8.5M of his salary was guaranteed for injury. Ryan’s grievance regards the $3M difference.

From what I gather, Ryan had postseason finger surgery. So the dispute is based on if he’s entitled to the full $8.5M because he was released after surgery.

While the sides await a resolution, 40% of the disputed amount counts on the cap. So that’s $1.2M currently unavailable.

As Raanan wrote, the Giants saved slightly under $800,000 against the salary cap by cutting Ryan. General manager Joe Schoen, who was hired for that role in January and, thus, never signed Ryan, said that releasing the 31-year-old was the "best decision for the New York Giants."

Duggan added:

When Schoen said the timing of the Adoree' Jackson restructure was due to "some things that occurred," presumably he was referencing Ryan's grievance. The Giants had less than $1.2M in cap space at the time the grievance was filed.

Once they decided to restructure Jackson, it made sense to do the maximum amount since they're going to need more cap space eventually. The restructure created $6M in cap savings.
