Desmond Watson, the notable rookie defensive tackle, was noticeably absent from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ regular practice sessions as training camp got underway this week.

Head Coach Todd Bowles disclosed that rookie defensive tackle Desmond Watson is currently on the Non-Football Injury (NFI) list due to weight issues.

The Buccaneers signed Watson as a high-upside developmental project, but his weight has been a focus since joining the team. Listed at over 400 pounds during his college days, Watson has been working with the team on his conditioning. According to Head Coach Todd Bowles, while Watson isn’t practice-ready yet, he’s shown promising progress.

“He’s made some progress,” Bowles stated. “We’re continuing to work with him on getting his weight down, and he’s heading in the right direction.”

The Buccaneers put Watson on the Non-Football Injury (NFI) list, allowing him to prioritize his conditioning without the risk of on-field injury.

The Buccaneers were aware that Desmond Watson would require significant development when they drafted him, and the coaching staff is committed to ensuring he’s physically prepared before thrusting him into live-action situations. Watson may benefit from the guidance of veteran defensive lineman Vita Vea, who weighs around 350 pounds and is a top performer in the league, providing a potential template for Watson’s growth.

The Buccaneers haven’t provided a specific timeline for Desmond Watson’s return to practice, but his progress will be closely monitored. With a focused plan and time, the team hopes Watson can achieve the right balance to effectively contribute in the NFL.
