The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will start training camp without one of their top wide receivers. As anticipated, wide receiver Chris Godwin will miss the start of training camp due to ongoing rehab from a serious injury.
Via Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times,
“Bucs WR Chris Godwin, who still is recovering from a dislocated ankle, will not participate in team related activities to begin training camp. He will continue to rehab with trainers.”
Godwin is nearing the end of his rehab from a season-ending ankle dislocation suffered in Week 7. Before the injury, he was having a career year with an average of 7.1 catches per game, which likely played a role in his lucrative three-year, $66 million contract extension this offseason. Despite being 29 and coming off a major injury, Godwin’s deal includes two-thirds of the money guaranteed. Coach Todd Bowles expressed optimism in June that Godwin could be ready for the season opener, but there’s been no update on his expected return date. Fortunately for the Buccaneers, they have a solid receiving corps, led by rookie Emeka Egbuka, alongside veterans Mike Evans and Jalen McMillan.
