One of the biggest surprises of the 2024 NFL season was the emergence of Bucky Irving. In his rookie season out of Oregon, he slowly but surely took the starting role away from Rachaad White, who is a great running back in his own right. Thanks to the way he ended last season, plenty of fantasy football players are big on Bucky Irving. He might be being drafted a little higher than he should be, though.
Since he was getting more carries as the season went along, it’s more important to analyze how Irving finished as opposed to how he started. Irving didn’t even get more than ten carries until Week 4. From Week 10 onward he saw the ball a lot more, though. In that stretch, Irving rushed for over 100 yards three times and found the endzone in all but three games. That’s also just on the ground; as a pass catcher, Irving had at least one reception in all of those games, adding to his overall fantasy score.
Talent-wise, there’s no denying that Bucky Irving is a top-ten running back. The situation in Tampa Bay might threaten Irving’s production a bit, though. This is mostly because Rachaad White is still on the team, albeit in a backup role. He will still get a good chunk of the carries, though. On top of that, he might be their goal-line back, which would take touchdowns away from Bucky Irving.
As a result, he might be a little overvalued right now. Fantasy Pros has him ranked number seven out of all the running backs in the league. That’s ahead of guys like Jonathan Taylor (the clear workhorse for his team), James Cook (also a primary running back), Breece Hall, and Josh Jacobs (both of which might be seeing the ball more in 2025). Therefore, it might be safer to take one of these guys before Irving, who has a lower floor.
That being said, don’t wait on him too long either. His ADP is 19 at the moment, which puts him late second round or third round depending on the size of the league. Other players might pass up on him for Jonathan Taylor or Josh Jacobs. If it gets to the late third or early fourth round and Irving is still on the board, that is massive value. Don’t think; just pick Irving, and he’ll be the best RB2 in fantasy football.
