While the big injury storyline from the Bucs’ loss on Monday night football was about star wide receiver Mike Evans, there was also another significant injury to a starter and that was outside linebacker Haason Reddick.
The veteran edge rusher suffered an ankle and knee injury in the fourth quarter of the Bucs’ game on Monday night. He limped off the field after getting looked at by trainers and then eventually was carted off back to the locker room. It certainly looked like an injury that could keep him out for several weeks.
Head coach Todd Bowles had a zoom press conference on Tuesday morning where he was asked about Reddick and what his status is.
“He’s going to get an MRI today,” Bowles said. “So we’ll see what happens with that. Both (his) knee and ankle.”
We’ll have to wait and see how it looks for Reddick, who’s started all seven games in his first season with the Bucs. It’s been a mixed bag of results for him with Tampa Bay. He had a very important sack in Week 1 at Atlanta on a third-and-goal that forced a field goal. But then he went quiet for the next couple of games.
It took until Week 6 at home against San Francisco for Reddick to get his next sack, this one a half sack on Mac Jones. He and Yaya Diaby were generating more pressure than in recent weeks, helping Tampa Bay record six sacks in the game. Reddick had been dropping back in coverage more often that really anyone would like.
The pressure started to come back. Was it a sign of things to come? It’s hard to tell. Reddick has recorded 16 tackles in seven games along with 1.5 sacks, three tackles for loss and five quarterback hits.
Regardless of his production, the Bucs will have to replace a starter for several games. Next in line is veteran outside lineabcker and Bucs’ Super Bowl champion Anthony Nelson, who came in for Reddick on Monday. Nelson could’ve had a big moment in the game on a fourth down stop of Jahymr Gibbs, but he couldn’t hold on for the tackle. He’ll have an expanded plying role with Yaya Diaby leading the way, plus Chris Braswell should get more snaps next game.
The Bucs can also turn to Markees Watts, who’s primarily played on special teams along with Mo Kamara, who’s been on Tampa Bay’s practice squad. The team has gotten more production out of Yaya Diaby in recent weeks, so that needs to continue. But if Nelson, Braswell and some of the other options at outside linebacker aren’t working out, Jason Licht may have to get on the phone and trade for someone that can improve their production with several games remaining.
