The Tampa Bay Buccaneers experienced one of the largest collapses of the 2025 NFL season. The Bucs began the year 6-2 but finished 2-7, missing the playoffs.
The team is entering a significant offseason as two long-time players may be moving on to new teams or possibly retiring. One of these players is linebacker Lavonte David. Over his 14-year career, he has recorded a total of 1,714 tackles, which ties him with Hall of Fame linebacker Derrick Brooks for the most tackles in franchise history.
If David were to retire, the Tampa Bay team would likely need to fill that gap through the NFL draft or free agency. NFL.com's Gennaro Filice predicts the team will draft Georgia Bulldogs star linebacker CJ Allen.
"With Lavonte David pondering retirement, Todd Bowles has to be thinking about finding a new defensive nerve center," Filice wrote. "Allen’s scouting report screams GREEN-DOT DEFENDER. A starter for the last two-plus seasons on Georgia’s loaded roster, the linebacker fully bloomed in 2025, earning first-team All-America honors from the Associated Press. Everyone raves about his football IQ and leadership skills, but some question his ability in coverage. The combine workout looms large."
The effect of drafting Allen would be a proactive move by Tampa Bay to stabilize the heart of their defense. If David decides to retire, Tampa Bay would lose not just production but leadership and defensive command. David’s career underscores the magnitude of that potential void.
Head coach Todd Bowles relies heavily on linebackers who can diagnose plays, align the defense and wear the green dot. Allen’s reputation for football IQ and leadership fits that mold. As a multi-year starter for the Bulldogs, he developed in a pro-style defensive structure, which could ease his transition to the NFL. However, his coverage ability will be scrutinized during the pre-draft process, particularly in a league increasingly built around attacking linebackers in space.
Tampa Bay’s collapse from 6-2 to 8-9 highlights the urgency of maintaining defensive consistency. Whether David returns or not, investing in a future defensive centerpiece would signal long-term planning rather than short-term patchwork. If Allen becomes the next defensive signal-caller, the Bucs could soften the blow of losing one of the greatest players in franchise history while resetting the foundation of their defense.
