The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may be at a turning point in their franchise's history, as two key players, wide receiver Mike Evans and linebacker Lavonte David, might not be with the team next season.

David has had a 14-year career during which he recorded a total of 1,714 tackles, tying him with Hall of Fame linebacker Derrick Brooks for the most tackles in franchise history. However, he is currently contemplating retirement and has not yet made a decision.

Whether David retires or not, Tampa Bay's approach will likely not change significantly. They will need to begin planning for a future without him. That's why ESPN's Jordan Reid has them selecting Anthony Hill Jr., a two-time All-American linebacker from the Texas Longhorns, in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

"Bucs linebacker Lavonte David is weighing his options on whether he'll return for a 15th NFL season," Reid wrote. "A succession plan is necessary, and Hill is an urgent second-level defender who brings a high caliber of physicality."

If the Buccaneers decide to draft Hill, it would signal the beginning of a transition at one of the most important positions on their defense. Even if David ultimately returns for another season, Tampa Bay knows it must start preparing for the future after one of the most accomplished linebackers in franchise history.

Hill has emerged as one of the most dynamic defenders in college football during his time with the Longhorns. He built his reputation as a relentless downhill linebacker who excels at attacking ball carriers and disrupting plays behind the line of scrimmage. His speed and physicality allow him to thrive in both run defense and pursuit situations, traits that NFL teams covet in modern linebackers.

For Tampa Bay, selecting Hill could provide a long-term anchor in the middle of the defense. As the Buccaneers attempt to remain competitive in the NFC while their veteran core ages, adding a young defender with Hill’s range and intensity could help stabilize the unit and ensure the transition from the David era happens as smoothly as possible.
