Bucs Tight End Leaves Practice With Knee Injury
Katie Stratman-USA TODAY Sports

The Bucs received a bit of a scare during Wednesday’s joint practice session with the Jaguars in Jacksonville when reserve tight end Payne Durham went down with a knee injury. Thankfully the initial prognosis on Durham’s injury is that it is not severe and one team source told Pewter Report that Durham is likely day-to-day.

Head coach Todd Bowles said after practice that the team is “still running tests” on him.

Payne Durham Was The Only Bucs Injury On Wednesday

The joint practice between the Bucs and the Jaguars was largely uneventful in terms of pushing and shoving. Bucs head coach Todd Bowles commended both teams for getting good work in without any fighting or altercations.

“I mean there was some good work done,” Bowles said. “Doug [Pederson] runs a good program, we try to run a good program. There was some good work done on both sides. We got to see a different scheme and that’s what we’re trying to do. We’re trying to make each other better. Physicality is part of the sport, but we did a good job of taking care of each other today.”

In terms of current injured Bucs, tight end Payne Durham joins left tackle Justin Skule, defensive tackles Calijah Kancey and Mike Greene, wide receivers Sterling Shepard and Rakim Jarrett, strong safety Jordan Whitehead, running back Chase Edmonds, and outside linebacker Yaya Diaby on what has become a lengthier list as training camp has progressed.

With Durham, the team’s 2023 fifth-round pick, it will be intriguing to see his practice participation tomorrow and if it affects the amount of playing time he will receive when both teams face off on Saturday night. If he does not suit up or get as many opportunities, it means that Ko Kieft and Devin Culp will get an extended run to compete for the third tight end spot on the 53-man roster.

We will see how quickly he recovers from his knee injury as soon as Thursday morning when the Bucs and Jaguars host their second joint practice.
