Buffalo Bills Edge Rusher Joey Bosa suffered a calf injury and is likely out until training camp, according to NFL Insider Tom Pelissero. Bosa’s lengthy injury history continues, despite playing in an encouraging 14 games last year. Before that, the last time he played in double-digit games was in 2021. He played in a combined 14 games in 2022 and 2023.
Joey Bosa was one of the best edge rushers in the NFL from 2019-2021. Two out of those three years he recorded double-digit sacks, with 11.5 in 2019 and 10.5 in 2021. His “off” year in 2020 still saw him record 7.5 sacks, which is a very respectable number. The Buffalo Bills must have done their research and realized he’s a player with tremendous upside if he stays on the field.
Keep in mind it’s still very early, and Bosa will have plenty of time to recover from the injury. It’s not the type of news Buffalo Bills fans were probably hoping to hear, though, especially with one of their players who is due to make $12.6 million this upcoming season. The extent of football activities going on right now are just OTAs, so Bosa’s injury isn’t a huge deal but should cause some alarms to go off.
The Bills also learned that Running Back James Cook skipped out on OTAs. Whether this is a negotiation tactic to get a new contract extension done with Buffalo is yet to be seen, but it’s common for players to hold out of workouts and even training camp sessions if they’re seeking a new deal or not getting paid what they think they’re worth.
Reports from last season indicated Cook could be looking for a contract extension of around $15 million. We know what he wants. He came out and publicly said it. Is he skipping OTAs because he wants the extension now, or is it for a different reason? That question remains unanswered, and we’ll just have to wait and see.
This is not the news Buffalo Bills fans were hoping to hear. Bosa is an absolute beast when he’s healthy, but his inability to stay healthy has followed him to Buffalo and we aren’t even into training camp yet. Hopefully, Bosa will recover from the injury quickly and have a great season with the Bills this year.
