Buffalo Bills Face Growing Concern Over Starting Linebacker

Buffalo Bills training camp is underway, and one projected starter at linebacker faces uncertainty about his role amid an ongoing injury situation.

New head coach Joe Brady and defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard are overseeing the unit this year. The team continues to operate without free agents Shaq Thompson and Matt Milano, creating openings in the linebacker group.

Terrell Bernard and Dorian Williams entered the offseason as the expected starters. Williams, however, remains limited by injury, while fourth-round rookie Kaleb Elarms-Orr has drawn attention with strong showings in practices.

ESPN’s Alaina Getzenberg detailed recent developments in a report, writing, “Inside linebacker Terrel Bernard made his camp debut Saturday in 11-on-11 drills, pairing with rookie linebacker Kaleb Elarms-Orr. Linebacker Dorian Williams has not progressed yet to 11-on-11 work but was alongside Bernard in 7-on-7 drills. Elarms-Orr has seen opportunities with the absences, but Bernard getting more reps is a sign the unit is moving forward.”

Williams is entering the final season of his four-year rookie contract. A reduced role this year could affect his future free agency options after previously contributing solid production for the Bills.

Last season, Williams posted 63 tackles and one fumble recovery. Those numbers underscored his value, yet the current situation raises the possibility he shifts to a reserve position if the rookie continues advancing.

Elarms-Orr arrived later in the draft than many expected after generating interest among Bills supporters. The linebacker has expressed clear intentions about competing for a starting spot right away.

In comments from June, Elarms-Orr stated, “I wanna be the starter week one; I want to earn it. I want to be a guy who comes in and earns everyone’s respect.”

Leonhard has taken notice of the rookie’s approach during minicamp and the early stages of training camp. The defensive coordinator highlighted the young player’s demeanor and readiness.

“He’s taken advantage of a huge opportunity with backers ahead of him not being on the field, and he’s calm and collected,” Leonhard said. “He wants that role; he wants to be a lead communicator for a defense. That’s what he’s done in the past. He doesn’t blink.”

Williams first missed time during mandatory minicamp in June. Brady offered limited details at the time while expressing optimism about a potential return for camp.

Reporter Sal Capaccio summarized the coach’s remarks on social media, noting, “Brady said he thinks he can be ready for training camp, but they will see. Did not specifically say if it was the same injury from the playoff game. Said ‘guys get injured in season and offseason.’”

Williams has participated in some training camp sessions but remains restricted. Those limitations have given Elarms-Orr additional chances to work with the first-team defense.

With a new coaching staff in place, no roles appear locked in for the linebacker position. Continued strong performances by the rookie while Williams recovers could shift the depth chart significantly as camp progresses.
