Well, the Buffalo Bills start another off-season way too early. This off-season brings a ton of questions that Brandon Beane and Sean McDermott will need to answer. One of those questions is, who will be calling plays for Josh Allen and the offense in 2024?
Joe Brady did a great job jumping in this season, giving the offense a boost with what he had. However, he was still working with Ken Dorsey’s playbook. So the production was always going to be very limited. Right before the playoffs is probably when the production in that scheme was maxed out. But, will they give him a shot to be the team’s full time Offensive Coordinator? Or will they go a different route? Let’s look at some potential candidates.
The obvious Offensive Coordinator candidate, right? My thought exactly. Brady has coached some of the best QBs, from college (Joe Burrow) to the NFL (Josh Allen). We all know his story by now, I’d hope. But, what does his future look like? When Brady was hired by the Carolina Panthers, he said that his offensive philosophy was to make the defense cover every blade of grass. And, to an extent, that’s what the Bills did after Brady took over. We saw the ground game take off. We also saw receivers and TEs used the middle of the field more, not just the sideline. And we even saw Josh Allen take off and run more. The more Brady and the offense got comfortable this season, the more we saw it improve. Brady should only improve on a full year implementing the system he wants to run.
Early notes from the Bills today:

– Allen endorses Brady for permanent OC
– Hyde & Phillips contemplating retirement
– Davis is open to returning but anticipates hitting free agency
– Morse intends to return if the Bills will have him (1 year left on deal)#BillsMafia
Martin has been with the Baltimore Ravens since 2021, starting out as their WRs Coach before jumping to the QBs in 2023. He has familiarity with the Bills, having interviewed for their OC position in 2022 when Brian Daboll left. As Baltimore’s WRs Coach, Martin helped the unit overcome a lot of criticism from the fanbase and media. Marquise Brown had his first 1,000-yard season and they even got some production from their depth receivers as well. Much like the Ravens, the Bills saw some scrutiny from the fanbase this year about their receivers behind Stefon Diggs. Adding Martin would help that group grow on the field. He should be a strong outside candidate for the job.
Edgar, like Tee Martin, interviewed with Buffalo before hiring Ken Dorsey. Bennett has been the Las Vegas Raiders’ WRs Coach since 2018. Bennett has survived two HC changes in Vegas, and is going through another right now with Antonio Pierce. If Bennett is allowed to pursue other opportunities, the Buffalo Bills need to get him on the phone asap.
Bennett is a Super Bowl winning coach, getting a ring during his tenure with the Green Bay Packers. He served as WRs Coach there from 2011-2014, before being promoted to OC from 2015-2017. Mike McCarthy called the plays as the HC there, so Bennett doesn’t have any prior experience as a play caller. However, he probably has the most experience for this job.
Jerrod Johnson is one of my favorite position coaches in this cycle. Johnson currently serves as C.J. Stroud’s QB Coach in Houston. He’s one of the more intriguing coaches in this cycle, and has shot up the ranks fairly quickly. Johnson got his foot in the door back in 2017 with the 49ers as part of the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship. Since then, he’s gone from a Quality Control Coach, to Assistant QB Coach to QB Coach. Now, he’s getting Offensive Coordinator interviews, and likely will be a HC very soon.
Zac Robinson is another name who’s rising up boards, and it’s for three reasons: (1) he’s a Sean McVay prodigy, (2) he’s worked with Matthew Stafford, and (3) he’s led a Super Bowl-winning offense. Teams like to take coaches from the Sean McVay tree, and Robinson is going to be the next one plucked. Since 2020, Robinson and the Rams have had tremendous offensive success. And, to no surprise to Bills fans, so has Buffalo. Robinson is your guy to continue the offensive success we’ve seen in Buffalo.
