Buffalo Bills share video of Highmark Stadium enveloped by blizzard
Sam Greene/The Enquirer / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Buffalo Bills were supposed to host an NFL playoff game in less than 18 hours. Their social media team gave us a glimpse as to why the powers that be moved the wildcard contest against the Pittsburgh Steelers to Monday afternoon, showing a winterscape that had replaced the usually recognizable confines of Highmark Stadium.

The video, taken from the precipice of a tunnel to get on the field, makes it clear how low the visibility is, among other factors. A few utility vehicles parked around midfield were shrouded by the driving snow and wind.

Goal posts on the far side of the field couldn’t even be made out.

And the field itself more closely resembled the ice planet Hoth from “The Empire Strikes Back” than it does a suitable playing surface for an NFL game.

Amid the nasty weather, the Bills had a simple request for fans until Monday afternoon.

“Stay safe tonight, Bills Mafia,” the franchise said on the post.

The Bills-Steelers wildcard game was postponed due to the blizzard conditions

The game will be played Monday at 4:30 p.m. ET in Buffalo. The game was originally slated for Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET.

However, due to mass amounts of snow, conditions were worsened and safety measures were taken ahead of the game.

“The Buffalo Bills wild card game against the Steelers has been postponed until 4:30pm Monday,” the report stated. “Gov. (Kathy) Hochul issued a State of Emergency on Friday, to ensure extra resources will be available in Western New York to heal local officials deal with the winter storm.

“A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Erie, Genesee, Wyoming, Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties from 10AM Saturday to 7 a.m. Monday.  Per the NWS-Buffalo office: Heavy lake effect snow and very strong winds expected.  Total snow accumulations of 1 to 3 feet in the most persistent lake snows. Blizzard conditions will be possible at times, especially Saturday night and Sunday. 8 to 17 inches of snow for the S. Tier counties under the warning.”

In her speech, Hochul basically used the weather as an excuse to tell the Steelers fans to stay home, and decided to antagonize them even more by saying, “It’s going to be a tough game for you anyhow.”

Buffalo posted that they were looking for people to shovel snow, starting at 10 PM EST on Saturday night. Fans would be shoveling snow throughout the night in sub-freezing temperatures.
