Buffalo Bills Sign Super Bowl Champion Quarterback on Monday

The Buffalo Bills have brought Super Bowl-winning quarterback Shane Buechele back onto the practice squad after cutting him during final roster reductions.

Buffalo pared its roster to 53 players and waived Buechele, who had been competing as the third quarterback. Kyle Allen beat him out for a place on the active roster, even after Buechele turned in a solid training camp.

Buechele cleared waivers and is expected to rejoin the Bills on the practice squad, according to The Athletic’s Joe Buscaglia.

“The Bills are expected to sign QB Shane Buechele back to their practice squad, according to a league source. The QB group from this summer is back together again,” Buscaglia wrote.

That move keeps the same quarterback room together after a summer of camp work. Josh Allen remains the starter, with Allen holding the No. 2 job and Buechele available as depth if the club needs another arm.

Buechele first signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2021. He stayed with Kansas City as a backup in 2022, the season the Chiefs won the Super Bowl.

Kansas City waived him before the 2023 season. He then joined Buffalo’s practice squad and spent time with the Bills until 2025, when the Chiefs added him to the active roster after Patrick Mahomes was hurt.

Buechele made his NFL debut on Jan. 4, 2026. He completed 7 of 14 passes for 88 yards in that appearance. After he was released, he signed again with Buffalo and spent this training camp trying to win the backup job.

He did not land that roster spot, yet he chose to stay in western New York as the third quarterback rather than look elsewhere.

People around the team were a bit surprised he came back so quickly. Buechele said the locker room and the building made the decision easy.

“I love it here, I think the guys here are great, I love the guys,” Buechele said. “I love the coaching staff, the people in the building are great. It’s hard to beat this place. You know what I mean? Whenever you are happy walking in every single day, and excited to go to work, I think that’s rare. And so whenever you find that, man, it’s hard to leave.”

Those comments help explain why a veteran with a Super Bowl ring would accept a practice-squad role instead of chasing a higher spot on another roster. He said he likes walking into work each day, and that feeling is hard to replace.

Buechele also left a late impression in the preseason. He played the entire finale as Bills coach Joe Brady wanted to give him more snaps.

“Shane’s the one quarterback that hasn’t got as much preseason time through the years,” Brady said. “The way the game was flowing, I was like, ‘I kind of just want to keep him rolling with it.’”

Buechele handled the offense well, especially after halftime, and Buffalo rallied past the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“It was just execution,” Buechele said. “Me personally, I love a two-minute drill. You just get to play free, and the guys did a good job of executing, giving guys chances. The O-line did a great job. Wheeler running hard at the end, and then Dante running a great route. Everything came together.”

That performance did not keep him on the 53-man roster, but it gave coaches another look at a quarterback who already knows the building. Practice-squad players can be elevated during the season if injuries hit the quarterback room.

Buffalo now turns toward the regular season. The Bills open Sept. 13 against the Houston Texans, with Buechele available in the background if the club needs extra work at the position.
