The Dallas Cowboys enter 2026 with high expectations surrounding Dak Prescott, especially after one ESPN analysis suggested he could achieve a 5,000-yard passing season if the offensive line performs well. At the same time, Dallas is managing the George Pickens contract situation, though an ESPN insider has indicated that the Cowboys are unlikely to move on from him anytime soon.

The current Cowboys roster is filled with star power, drama, and pressure, very much in line with the team’s tradition.

But putting the modern headlines aside for a moment, let’s create the perfect all-time Cowboys team that could go 20-0.

Quarterback Roger Staubach

Choosing the quarterback for this team is tougher than some Cowboys fans might admit. While Troy Aikman has won three Super Bowls and deserves immense respect, Dak Prescott has impressive stats, and Tony Romo was more effective than many remember, Roger Staubach is the best choice for this team.

Staubach possessed leadership, mobility, toughness, and the knack for late-game magic that defines a perfect team. Known as “Captain Comeback,” he could devastate defenses from the pocket, evade pressure, and make the crucial play to break an opponent’s spirit. For a 20-0 team, we need a quarterback who inspires confidence that the game is never over.

Running Back Emmitt Smith

There’s no debate here. Emmitt Smith is the NFL’s all-time rushing leader and was the most critical offensive skill player of the Cowboys’ 1990s dynasty. He wasn’t the fastest or flashiest, but he had vision, balance, durability, toughness, and an exceptional ability to find the right moment to exploit a gap. Smith was effective in gaining the tough yards and finishing drives, as well as protecting leads, catching passes, and keeping the offense on schedule.

Wide Receiver Michael Irvin

Michael Irvin is the first receiver on this roster because he provided the Cowboys with their competitive edge. Irvin was physical, vocal, fearless, and suited for big games. He did more than catch passes, as he imposed his will on defenses. Cornerbacks had to contend with his strength, precise route running, and a combative spirit that turned every snap into a battle.

Wide Receiver Drew Pearson

Drew Pearson deserves a spot here because he helped define the Cowboys before their 1990s dynasty emerged. He was clutch, refined, and always seemed to step up in crucial moments. Pearson wasn’t merely a numbers player; he commanded respect from opponents when the stakes were highest.

Wide Receiver CeeDee Lamb

CeeDee Lamb definitely makes the cut. He provides the offense with a modern weapon capable of moving throughout the formation, effectively separating from defenders whether in the slot or outside, and creating opportunities after the catch. Lamb has become one of the most productive receivers in football, which adds a new layer of flexibility to this all-time offense.

Tight End Jason Witten

Jason Witten is an easy selection for this roster. Although he might not have been the fastest tight end, he was consistently open. Witten had an excellent understanding of leverage, spacing, and timing, making him one of the best at the position.

He was durable, reliable, and always a trusted target in serious situations.

Left Tackle Tyron Smith

At his peak, Tyron Smith was exceptional.

He possessed elite size, strength, footwork, and athleticism. For years, he neutralized edge rushers and was integral in forming one of the best offensive lines in modern football. A 20-0 team requires a blindside protector who can handle both speed and power, and Smith checks every box.

Left Guard Larry Allen

Larry Allen might be the most intimidating offensive lineman ever. His strength was legendary, his athleticism was astonishing, and his attitude perfectly suited this kind of team. Allen could dominate defenders in the run game while still moving well enough to handle pass protection against elite talent.

Center Travis Frederick

Travis Frederick earns the starting position at center because his peak performance is too impressive to ignore. He was intelligent, powerful, technically sound, and became the brain of an elite Dallas offensive line. Although his career was shortened, when healthy, he played like one of the best centers in football. This team needs a center who can organize everything, and Frederick can certainly do that.

Right Guard Zack Martin

Zack Martin is a slam dunk selection. From the moment he entered the league, he played like a future Hall of Famer. He has been consistent, dominant, technically polished, and rarely beaten. Guards do not always receive the attention they deserve, but Martin’s performance has been too exceptional to overlook. Having Allen and Martin as the two guards is astonishing in the best way possible.

Right Tackle Erik Williams

Erik Williams brings a tough, aggressive presence to the right side of the line. Before injuries impacted his career, Williams was among the most dominant tackles in football. He played with a ferocity and confidence that made defenders dread lining up against him.

Defensive Tackle Bob Lilly

Bob Lilly is the cornerstone of the Cowboys’ defensive front. Known as “Mr. Cowboy,” he was the franchise’s first true superstar and is regarded as one of the greatest defensive tackles in NFL history. He was quick, powerful, relentless, and disruptive from the interior. Any all-time Cowboys defense starts with Lilly, and there is no debate about that.

Defensive Tackle Randy White

Randy White next to Lilly creates a combination that makes this team feel extraordinary. White played with boundless energy and aggression, as he could rush the passer, stop the run, and set the tone for the entire defense. His legendary motor and toughness reflected the Cowboys’ best eras. With Lilly and White inside, any quarterback would face tremendous challenges.

Edge Rusher DeMarcus Ware

DeMarcus Ware introduces a modern pass-rush superstar to the defense. Ware possessed speed, agility, strength, and consistency, making him one of the most feared edge defenders of his generation. With Lilly and White collapsing the middle, Ware would be nearly impossible to contain.

Edge Rusher Harvey Martin

Harvey Martin earns the other edge rusher spot for his remarkable contributions. He is one of the greatest pass rushers in Cowboys history and a Super Bowl MVP. His sack production was impressive even before sacks were consistently tracked. Martin brought length, power, and big-game performance.

Linebacker Chuck Howley

Chuck Howley is undeniably one of the greatest linebackers in NFL history. He could cover, tackle, and make impactful plays all over the field. As the first defensive player to win Super Bowl MVP, his ability to influence a game is clear. Howley provides this defense with range and championship experience.

Linebacker Lee Roy Jordan

Lee Roy Jordan served as the anchor of the Cowboys’ defense for many years. He was instinctive, tough, and dependable in the middle. While he may not possess modern size, his intelligence and physicality allowed him to effectively lead a defense filled with stars. Every exceptional defense needs a traffic controller, and Jordan fits that role.

Linebacker Micah Parsons

Micah Parsons is too talented to leave off the roster. Whether categorized as a linebacker or an edge rusher, Parsons adds unpredictability. His speed, explosiveness, and pass-rushing ability make him a nightmare for offenses. On this all-time team, he would move around, exploit weaknesses, and demand constant attention from opposing offenses.

Cornerback Mel Renfro

Mel Renfro is the first cornerback named to this all-time roster. An elite athlete and Hall of Famer, he was a major playmaker in the secondary, and with 52 career interceptions and the versatility to impact games in multiple ways, Renfro provides this defense with an exceptional cover man.

Cornerback Deion Sanders

Deion Sanders may not have spent his entire career in Dallas, but his peak performances with the Cowboys certainly deserve recognition. Prime Time changed games without ever needing to touch the ball, quarterbacks simply avoided his side of the field. He brought exceptional speed, swagger, ball skills, and championship confidence. With Deion on the team, good luck trying to throw the ball his way.

Safety Darren Woodson

Darren Woodson is the most obvious choice for safety. He was a cornerstone of the 1990s Cowboys defense, excelling in coverage, tackling, blitzing, and matching up against tight ends. His versatility perfectly translates to the modern game, providing the secondary with toughness and intelligence.

Safety Cliff Harris

Cliff Harris embodies the old-school edge. He was physical, fearless, and a key player in the Doomsday Defense era. Harris played with an attitude that made receivers think twice about crossing the middle of the field.

Kick Returner Bob Hayes

Bob Hayes secures the return spot because his incredible speed changes everything. Known as “Bullet Bob,” he was one of the fastest players in football history, forcing the game to adapt to his presence.

Place-Kicker Dan Bailey

Dan Bailey is the choice for kicker. For a significant stretch of his career, he was one of the most accurate kickers in NFL history. On a team aiming for a perfect season, reliability is far more important than nostalgia.

Head Coach Tom Landry

Tom Landry will coach this team. While Jimmy Johnson built a dynasty and deserves consideration, Landry is the defining coach in Cowboys history. He created innovative systems, enjoyed decades of success, reached five Super Bowls, and gave the franchise its identity as “America’s Team.” With this roster, Landry would have answers for every challenge.
