It took a while for it to finally show up on the field, but the Caleb Williams - Colston Loveland connection is starting to turn heads during the Chicago Bears training camp.

Loveland, the team's first-round selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, missed all of the spring and first few days of camp while rehabbing back from a shoulder injury suffered during his final season at Michigan that had to be surgically repaired.

On Saturday, Loveland took the field for the first time with the Bears offense and started getting integrated with his new quarterback.

By Monday, Loveland was fully participating in team drills, with pads on, without any restrictions.

Behind the scenes, Loveland has been grinding in his playbook in preparation for this moment to avoid falling behind in any way. When it comes to building a connection with his quarterback, the two have made sure they're spending time together off the field as well.

"He's been great," Williams told reporters on Wednesday. "He's a smart cat. We've hung out a few times. We actually just, him and a couple of other teammates, went down to the city on our off day and had dinner. We're hanging out and building that bond, building that trust."

Building that bond and trust has shown on the field. Over the last three days of practice, Williams has looked Loveland's way on multiple occasions during team drills and has been more than impressed from what he's seen out of his new pass catcher.

"On the field wise, he's smart. He knows what he's doing. He's a young cat so there's going to be a few mistakes and things like that," Williams added. "When the ball goes up, I got all faith in him. The other day, I actually threw a ball down the middle to him and the ball slipped out of my hands. . . he went up and grabbed it and came down with it. It was a big catch. Things like that provide trust, faith, and belief that whenever that ball goes up in the air, it's his."

Loveland's play-making ability makes him a potential big-play waiting to happen anytime Williams throws him the ball. But, as a tight end, not every big play is a splash play.

During 11-on-11 drills on Tuesday, Williams and Loveland connected on a third-and-seven completion over the middle to move the chains. The type of plays expected to be made out of a reliable tight end in a need-to-have-it situation.

"An open-or-not type read, sit it down if you need to, if there’s space. That’s all it was," Loveland explained on Tuesday. "Caleb found me, did a good job finding me and we converted, which is always what you’re trying to do on third down."

Loveland has been more than just a pair of safe hands for his quarterback. The rookie has been drawing high reviews for his blocking ability and was even seen lead blocking for his quarterback on a read option that turned into a TD and the end of practice on Wednesday.

The quicker these two build a strong connection, the better. And already the arrows are pointing straight up for what this duo can accomplish together.
