It took him three weeks, but Ben Johnson has finally won his first game as a head coach.
The Chicago Bears' offense finally showed signs of life, and they never took their foot off the gas en route to a 31-14 win over the Dallas Cowboys.
It was a well-rounded win for the Bears, with Caleb Williams looking like a superstar, throwing for 298 yards and four touchdowns. That's why the former No. 1 pick wanted to make it loud and clear that this is just the beginning, and we haven't seen the best of this team yet.
“How strong of a coach he is, how mentally tough that he is, it feeds into all of us,” Williams said, via Larry Mayer of the team's website. “To be able to have this win, it’s important to have this moment with his family, with us as players, but also for this organization and the momentum that we’re trying to catch. The train is going. It’s starting. We’ve just got to keep going and be consistent and stay on the rails.”
Williams' play had left plenty to be desired in the first two weeks of the season. But with an offensive-minded and creative head coach at the helm, expectations are still high for the USC product.
Ironically, Williams' best game as a pro came against his former head coach, Matt Eberflus, who's the defensive coordinator for the Cowboys.
Granted, the Cowboys' defense has struggled this season, giving up 92 points through three weeks. Still, the Bears needed a stepping stone to keep building morale after two tough losses to start this new era, and exploiting a subpar defense certainly qualifies.
