Head coach Ben Johnson’s Chicago Bears continue to find ways to win.
Unlike years past, and previous head coaching regimes, Johnson’s squads have developed a propensity for fourth quarter comebacks and timely plays in tight games. Winners of six-of-seven, Chicago’s last five victories have been by one score or fewer, a fact that isn’t lost on second-year quarterback Caleb Williams.
“It does build confidence,” Williams told reporters following Sunday’s 24-20 comeback over the Giants. “…It doesn’t matter what happened throughout the game, we can come through as a team.”
Williams was surgical, especially in the second half of Sunday’s win, passing for 220 yards and a touchdown, while adding 63 rushing yards and another score as a catalyst for the Bears’ latest win that helps Chicago keep pace in the NFC North.
During his rookie season, Williams posted a pair of fourth-quarter comebacks and game-winning drives.
Just 10 weeks into the 2025 campaign, Williams doubled his total from last season, and Sunday’s victory over the Giants may have been his most impressive yet, in crunch time.
In snowy conditions at Soldier Field, Williams completed five of nine fourth-quarter passes for 77 yards and a touchdown in addition to rushing for a team-high 52 yards and a score in the final frame.
Williams’ late-game heroics have become a hallmark this season, guiding the Bears to fourth-quarter comeback wins against the Giants, Bengals, Commanders, and Raiders, so far.
The NFC North lead is within striking distance for Williams, Johnson, and the Bears, who sit at 6-3 with four divisional games still remaining, including the regular-season finale against the Detroit Lions. If Williams’ clutch performances continue, the pieces could be in place for a special season and a winning culture taking root in the waning moments of games through the rest of the 2025 campaign.
