Calvin Austin injury delivers brutal blow to Giants offense

Calvin Austin III had done everything the New York Giants could have asked this summer. He made plays, earned Jaxson Dart’s trust and appeared headed for a meaningful role in the offense.

But Austin went down while making a cut during a one-on-one rep against cornerback Deonte Banks in Tuesday's practice, according to ESPN. He remained on the ground as teammates gathered around him and was eventually taken off on a cart.

There has been no official diagnosis yet. Still, the reaction on the field made it clear this was not viewed as a minor scare.

Calvin Austin had earned a role with the Giants

Austin arrived in New York on a one-year contract after four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was hardly the biggest addition in a crowded receiver room, especially with Odell Beckham Jr. also attempting a comeback.

That did not stop Austin from separating himself.

The 27-year-old consistently made plays throughout camp and developed into one of Dart’s more reliable options. Austin could work from the slot, line up outside and contribute in the return game. His speed gave the Giants something different.

Austin also looked ready to replace some of the production lost when Wan’Dale Robinson departed in free agency. This was no longer a player merely fighting for the final roster spot. He was pushing for regular snaps.

That is what makes Tuesday’s injury so cruel. Austin had earned his opportunity before one awkward cut potentially took it away.
