Carolina Panthers fans are still reeling from the surprising omission of Luke Kuechly from the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s first-ballot class. Even one of Kuechly’s closest teammates, Cam Newton, is voicing his frustration over the decision.
Kuechly’s Hall of Fame Credentials Speak for Themselves
Kuechly’s career was nothing short of dominant. With 1,092 tackles, 18 interceptions, and 7 Pro Bowls, his resume is Hall of Fame-worthy. Newton highlighted Kuechly’s “impact” and noted that his list of accolades—like a Defensive Player of the Year award—demonstrates his undeniable greatness. “He has everything that any defensive player would ever want career-wise,” said Newton.
The Respect Kuechly Earned From Peers
Newton also emphasized Kuechly’s impact off the field, acknowledging the widespread respect the linebacker commanded from teammates and opponents alike. As Newton put it, Kuechly’s leadership and consistent performance were “something that anybody would respect.”
A Culture of Change Needed in Voting
Frustrated by the snub, Newton pointed to other deserving players like Sterling Sharpe, who also didn’t get in immediately. Newton called for a more inclusive, culture-driven approach to Hall of Fame voting, suggesting that it’s time to recognize those who truly shaped the game. “We have to start saying, like, yo, for the culture,” he said.
